The Spirit of Prophecy

Ellen G. White (1827–1915)

Adventists understand the biblical "gift of prophecy" (1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11, Revelation 19:10) as continuing in the church. Ellen White's seventy years of writing — devotional, theological, pastoral, and practical — are received as an exercise of that gift. Scripture remains the final authority; her writings are tested by it, never the reverse.

How to read her writings

  1. Bible first. Start with Scripture. Use her writings to illuminate, not to replace, the Word.
  2. Read in context. Quotations taken out of historical or pastoral context can mislead. Read whole chapters, not isolated paragraphs.
  3. Begin with the devotional works. Steps to Christ is a one-week read and the gentlest introduction.
  4. Then the Conflict of the Ages series. Patriarchs and Prophets → Prophets and Kings → The Desire of Ages → The Acts of the Apostles → The Great Controversy. The whole narrative arc of Scripture.
  5. Test by Scripture. Isaiah 8:20 — "To the law and to the testimony! If they don't speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them."
