Bible Verses for Prayer

Prayer is not a skill you have to master before God will hear you. It is a conversation God invites you into. These fourteen passages are for the person who feels stuck, the person who wonders if it is working, and the person who just wants to learn to pray.

Matthew 6:9-13

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Jesus' model prayer. If you do not know how to start, start here. It covers worship, surrender, provision, forgiveness, and protection — in about a minute.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

Pray without ceasing is not a marathon prayer session — it is a running conversation through the day.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

Everything. Bring the small thing. Bring the embarrassing thing. Bring the same thing you brought yesterday.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

Insistent. Keep asking. The persistence is not nagging — it is what faith looks like under pressure.

Matthew 7:7-8

Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.

Three verbs, all in the present continuous — keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking. Prayer is not one-and-done.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

Boldness. Not because you are worthy, but because the throne is a throne of grace.

John 15:7

If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

Notice the order. Remain in Him first. Let His words shape your desires. Then the asking changes.

1 John 5:14-15

This is the boldness which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

He listens. Even the prayers that are not yet answered have been heard.

Psalm 145:18

Yahweh is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Near. To everyone who calls. In truth — not pretending.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we do not know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

When you do not know how to pray, the Spirit prays for you. There are no wrong words.

Matthew 6:6

But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Jesus is not banning public prayer. He is telling you the deepest prayer happens where no one is watching.

Psalm 5:3

Yahweh, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.

Morning prayer. Brought as a request. Watched for, expectantly. That is the whole shape of it.

Luke 18:1

He also spoke a parable to them that they must always pray, and not give up.

Always. And not give up. Even when nothing seems to be happening.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

Wisdom is one of the few things God promises to give to anyone who asks for it. Ask.

A prayer

Father, teach me to pray. Not just to say words, but to talk with You. Help me to bring the things I have been hiding. Help me to listen. Make prayer a steady fire in my day, not a panic button. Amen.
